Keep it practical

Does a scientific reference make a food claim reliable?

Not by itself. Check whether the reference supports the exact promise, concerns comparable foods and circumstances, and acknowledges limits. A citation about a broad dietary pattern cannot automatically justify a precise claim for one ingredient or branded product.

Should I reject advice if the publisher sells a related product?

A sales link is a reason for closer scrutiny, not automatic rejection. Look for direct evidence, clear limitations, realistic alternatives and separation between editorial information and promotion. Be especially cautious when the purchase is presented as the only route to a promised result.

How can I challenge food rules without overthinking every meal?

Use a short filter: identify the promise, check for absolute wording, find the original support and consider the whole eating pattern. Reserve deeper research for advice requiring expensive purchases, broad exclusions or major changes; ordinary preference-based choices need less investigation.

General food education, not medical advice or a personalised diet. Needs differ. For a health condition, allergy or prescribed diet, seek advice from an appropriately qualified professional. Read our editorial approach.
